NAACP. Recommendation 2A of the national NAACP Six-Point Plan for Educational Equity states: The federal government must ensure that all students have high-quality early childhood education that ensures literacy by the third grade.

The American Federation of Teachers, the 1.5 million teachers’ union headed by Randi Weingarten: “Teaching students to read by the end of third grade is the single most important task assigned to elementary schools. ” “No other skill taught in school and learned by school children is more important than reading. It is the gateway to all other knowledge.”

 

Mission Readiness, a bipartisan group of more than 150 retired generals and admirals formed a nonprofit, national security organization. They write in their report: Maine’s Young Adults: Ready, Willing, and Unable to Serve that 75% of Americans aged 17-24 are not eligible to serve in the military. One of three crucial reasons: inadequate education. 30% (3 out of 10) of potential recruits with a high school degree cannot earn a qualifying score on the Armed Forces Qualification Test, the AFQT, the untimed screening test that includes vocabulary and arithmetic assessments.

 

The Campaign for High School Equity: A diverse coalition of national organizations representing communities of color that believe high schools should have the capacity and motivation to prepare every student for graduation, college, work, and life.
